The Geekery

If you’re at Zenkaikon next weekend drop by and say hi!

Completed the set of Attack on Titan Insignia.  I’m thinking of getting these printed as postcards for Zenkaikon.

Living gerbils designed, now it’s time to reanimate them!

I always wanted a pocket dragon of my very own.  Until mad science makes it happen this will have to do.
I’ve always loved dragons but it occurred to me recently that I haven’t drawn one in years.  This started as a gargantuan beast guarding a portal to another realm and ended up wrapped around a coin.
Mermaids are an area of fantasy art where I have some strong opinions, many of which are on display on this piece.
Much like winged creatures I don’t like using a nondescript creature for a source.  Nature is so much more exciting than black or white wings and blue or green fish tails.  My favorite winged character is based off a bluebird and in this case these merpeople are based on the mandarin fish.  I also don’t like the abrupt stop to the fish features at the waist because human skin would not hold up under water, much preferring a more continuous treatment of the fish aspects.  That also goes for fins, there should be more than just the tail fin for steering purposes.
My biggest pet peeve however is mermaids with knees, especially if they are merged with fish as opposed to sea mammals.  Aside from looking like a normal person wearing a costume a fish gets it’s propulsion by swaying it’s tail from side to side.  If they have knee joints in the tail the ability to get that side to side motion is completely undermined.  I only give a pass for the marine mammal combinations because they move their tails up and down for propulsion so while the knee joint still looks silly to me it is at least functional.
I’ve never been completely happy with the original of this so when I started looking at the bookmarks I wanted to get printed for Zenkaicon I decided it had to be redone.
This is a quick first draft/color study.  Among the things to be changed are positioning of the figures so thry’re less head-on, the text needs lots of work, adding more environmental elements to make it feel more like an alley and I’m considering a flower pattern on the tea set.

The Value of Fanart

I dislike the idea that fanart is inherantly less valuable than original work.  This is one of my reasons.
